Pinghai Ancient City

The ancient city of Pinghai is located at the southern end of Huidong County, Huizhou City, facing the South China Sea, east of the Red Sea, west of Daya Bay. It was once a military fortress and is known as a "living fossil" of Lingnan culture. The ancient city now retains the four gates and some city walls in the east, south, west and north. Although there are not many monuments, you can still feel the charm of that history when you walk in the narrow streets.

There is a temple in the ancient city of Pinghai, which was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt in the 1980s. In front of auspicious mural of a dragon fish leaping across the Chenghuang Temple, there is a stone table. The stone table is newly made, but it is embedded with a stone carving of a blue stone carving. The surface weathering is relatively large and it should look old. It may be that the master who made the stone table deliberately set the old stone carvings on it to preserve the traces of history as much as possible. From the temple gate to the temple, the statue, the table, the zilian, the inscriptions, sculptures, etc., all retain the characteristics of ancient architecture and art. Its text and paintings run through the awareness of exhorting people to exorcise evil and good. On both sides of the hall, 12 murals are set to warn people of the consequences of good and evil.

On the west side of Pinghai Ancient City, there is a Chenghuang Temple, which was built in Mingyongle three years (1405) and has been rebuilt many times. During the Cultural Revolution, it was completely demolished. In the late 1980s, the local people and Hong Kong compatriots contributed money to renovate it. The Chenghuang Temple is beautifully built, and the stories of historical figures are sculptured on each floor. From the temple gate to the temple, the statue, the table, the temple, the inscription, the sculpture, etc., all retain the artistic characteristics of ancient architecture, and its text and paintings permeate the consciousness of exhorting people to exorcise evil and good. There is a city tower in front of the temple, and a city pavilion on the right, 6 meters high, three-story structure. There is a stage and a open-air square that can accommodate 2,000 people in the front right corner.

The unique origin and geographical environment of the ancient city have created a unique language military voice. It is a combination of Guangzhou dialect, Chaozhou dialect and Hakka dialect based on the northern voice. It can be used freely and answered in a variety of dialects. Therefore, the eastern Guangdong area spreads the saying "know Pinghai dialect, travel all over the world".
