based on 1858 reviewsThe City Walls in the coastal town of Kotor in Montenegro is one of the best-preserved medieval defense systems in the Mediterranean. The fortifications were built in the 9th century and expanded and reinforced during the Byzantine, Venetian and Austrian rule periods before finally reaching their current size in the 18th century. The city wall combines the architectural features of Venice and the Balkans. The main structure is made of gray-white limestone and features fortresses, towers and three ancient city gates. The "Sea Gate" built in 1555 is iconic. The lintel was once inlaid with the Venetian lion emblem, the Habsburg double-headed eagle and the Yugoslav five-pointed star, witnessing the change of regimes. You need to climb stone steps to get to the top of the city wall, but the panoramic views from the viewing platforms along the way and the top of the St. John Fortress are very beautiful. Looking down from a high vantage point, the red roofs of the old town of Kotor, the winding streets and the blue waters of the Bay of Kotor are breathtaking. Whether you are a history lover or a natural scenery seeker, this place can bring an unforgettable experience.
