【Kyoto·Higashikannonji Temple】
[The Thirty-three Kanyin Temples in Luoyang Chapter 31: Eastward Kanyin Temple]
East Kannon Temple is located directly in front of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. It is on the left after entering from the big torii gate of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is to commemorate Sugawara Michizane, a public official and scholar in the middle Heian period of Japan. Born into a family of scholars for generations. He is good at Chinese poetry and is respected by the Japanese as the god of learning. When he was young, he studied at Higashi Kannonji Temple. He rose to prominence and won the trust and importance of Emperors Uta and Daigo. Later, he was killed by traitors and was exiled to Kyushu. On the day of his death, it is said that all the plum blossoms fell to the ground in Kyoto. After his death, the government and the public were also in turmoil. Later Later generations helped him rehabilitate and established a shrine to worship him⛩️ to comfort his spirit in heaven, which is now Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine has become a shrine to bless and protect knowledge. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine also planted Sugawara Michizane’s favorite things. The plum blossoms have also become the most important plum blossom viewing spot in Kyoto.
