Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a famous Buddhist temple located in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It is also known as Wat Chao Phraya Thai, and its full name is Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon Worawihan. The temple is known for its magnificent pagoda, which is one of the largest in Ayutthaya and is visible from far away. The history of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon dates back to the 14th century, during the reign of King U-Thong. At that time, the area where the temple is located was a jungle. The king wanted to establish a new city, and he ordered the construction of the temple to mark the city's northern entrance. The temple was built to house a Buddha image, which the king had ordered to be cast. Over the years, the temple underwent several renovations and expansions, with each subsequent king of Ayutthaya adding to its splendor. In the 16th century, King Naresuan the Great added a large chedi (pagoda) to the temple, which is the most notable feature of the temple today. The chedi is about 62 meters tall and has a diameter of about 36 meters at its base. It is surrounded by smaller chedis, each containing a Buddha image. The temple was also used as a site for royal ceremonies, and several kings of Ayutthaya were cremated at the temple. During the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya in the 18th century, the temple was badly damaged. It fell into disrepair until the 1950s when it was restored by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand. This is the location where 'Journey to the West' and 'Lost in Thailand' were filmed. In Thai, it means 'Victorious and Auspicious', it was built by Ramathibodi I, the founder of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, in 1357 AD, and is one of the oldest temples in Thailand. The temple is most famous for its reclining Buddha and pagoda, next to which is a large group of Buddha statues. If you observe carefully, you can find that the Buddha's head and body are not sculpted from the same era. This is because when the post road was originally built, in order to covet convenience, they indiscriminately cut down the Buddha's body to fill the road for construction, which is quite a wonder.

This temple located in the Ancient City of Ayutthaya was built in the 14th century to commemorate the killing of the Burmese prince in the war with Burma, hence the meaning behind its name: a great victory. The temple is famous for having a 28-meter-long reclining Buddha. This huge reclining Buddha lies comfortably in the sun making people feel the peace at first sight. There are many Buddha statues around the beautiful pagoda. Tourists are allowed to climb up the pagoda. Just be careful because the stairs are steep and also kind of tiring yet fun! There is a small Buddhist hall inside where you can pray and also make a wish through the well by tossing a coin.
