Yuzhou Dikeng Courtyard is also called the "Heavenly Well Courtyard," "Cool Earth Pit" and the “Ground Kiln”. This is a type of underground courtyard known in northern China, which is built on the legacy of ancient people’s cave dwellings. The courtyard is located on the edge of the great loess plateau. The loess-type soil is thick and hard, giving the caves a kind of natural temperature regulator, making it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Simple and inexpensive to build and maintain, such a building is ideal for rural mountain populations. This is why dikeng courtyards have long been loved by the people of the mountains to the west of the Yellow River. Those who grew up in the loess plateau area have a deep attachment to this style of construction and to this land.
