Headquarters of the Province and Prefecture of Varese, Villa Recalcati is one of the most significant examples of Italian eighteenth-century suburban architecture, built on an area sloping down towards Lake Varese. Its first nucleus was actually built in the second half of the seventeenth century, as a country villa of the noble Milanese Recalcati family and at the end of the century it must already have been of considerable importance, given that it was chosen in 1682 to host the favorite of the Governor of Milan, Count of Melgar , visiting the village of Casbeno.
