Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the main attraction of Zhangjiajie. It is famous for its sandstone landforms, precarious peaks, limpid streams, dense forests, and large karst caves. More than 3,000 mountain peaks of various shapes are congregated here in the park, forming a spectacular scenery. The park was thrust into foreign travelers' eyes after the booming success of the movie “Avatar”, in which the Hallelujah Mountains were inspired by the Heavenly piller of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The main attractions in the park are Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Peak, Golden Whip Stream and Yellow Stone Village. The mountains have peculiar shapes, often surrounded by fog and mist giving visitors a view similar to the drawings of a traditional chinese painting.

Famous for its spires that inspired the Avatar movie. Zhangjiajie National Park - otherwise known as “the avatar mountains” - is a ridiculous collection of tall spires that are easily accessible and visitable in a day.
Located near Tianmen Mountain, the park is full of hiking trails, cable cars, and a famous elevator.
While extremely popular among domestic tourists, heading to the park outside of a national holiday should give you enough space to enjoy parts of it to yourself al- just don’t hesitate to head off the beaten path and down some of the smaller trails.
The park also comprises a bus system to get you around, though I definitely recommend grabbing some drinks and snacks before you go just in case.
My winter wonderland vacation, January 2020 at Zhangjiajie.
My partner and I went over the Spring Festival break so we assumed it would be crowded. However, it was the opposite! We stayed near the park and the area was so quiet it felt like a ghost town. Many restaurants were closed but we still managed to get food from the locals by the hostels. After 1 day, they announced that no one could purchase tickets due to Coronavirus, but luckily we had already purchased tickets, although we did not get to go to Heaven’s Gate.
We were very lucky to have experienced the park with no crowds. It felt like we were the only ones on the mountain. There was mist and didn’t get to see the view hiking up the mountain, but it gave a mystical feel🙌🏽. We only realized how high we were taking the cable car down and it was an amazing but scary view! We were also greeted by McDonald’s on top of the mountain! The few raindrops and snow was absolutely beautiful and refreshing. Perhaps less people go during this time due to the weather, but I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a Winter Wonderland experience❄️
Getting There - We took a flight from Beijing direct to Zhangjiajie. From there, our hotel organised a driver to pick us up (6 of us), which cost around 200rmb.
Attractions - Zhangjiajie national park!
Hotels - we stayed at Zhangjiajie Super Mountain hotel. It had a pool and gorgeous views of the mountains. It was a 10 minute walk (absolute maximum) from the park entrance. It also served great Chinese food, had a pool table and the staff were very accommodating. There wasn’t much else around the hotel in terms of restaurants, just a couple of shops selling necessities. If you’d prefer to be closer to the action, the Pullman and Crowne Plaza were a stones throw away from a different entrance which also had lots of more of restaurants and shops.
Food & Restaurants - McDonalds within the park, and a KFC / Starbucks on the outside of the park but within walking distance of the entrances.
Shopping - lots of small souvenir shops!
Day2 Route：Forest Park ticket station - Huangshi Village - Golden Whip Creek - Ten miles gallery. There are a lot of monkeys at the gate of the forest park and Huangshi village, we met the monkey fight, there are a lot of monkey mothers with little monkeys ask food from tourists, you should better not taking food and bags, or there will be a risk of being caught by monkeys! Huangshi Village is the earliest scenic area developed in Zhangjiajie. Now not many people go there. You can walk for 2 hours to avoid the crowds. Ten Mile Gallery is great place to be visit by a small train. When you enter, you’d better to sit on the left side of the train and when you come out, you sit on the right side of the train. Three sisters mountain is the most significant attention.Although we caught the rain, but after the rain the air more fresh, misty like a fairyland! So beautiful!
