The outer part of Chiang Mai Old City is surrounded by a moat. The inner side of the moat was originally covered with brick walls, but over the years, only certain parts of the moat have retained traces of the walls. The Old City is square shaped and retains four sites of remnants of the city corners and five sites of remnants of the city gates. The Chiang Mai Gate is the south gate of Chiang Mai Old City and one of the more well preserved of the old city gates in Chiang Mai. The main entrance of Chiang Mai Gate is made purely out of wood and exudes a sense of ancient history.
