New Regent Street Precinct

"New Regent Street" is a famous open-air shopping center in Christchurch. There are some specialty shops and restaurants, but all the shops have closed, and only the restaurants are still open. The streets are not long, but the two sides are European-style buildings, very distinctive. "New Regent Street" was completed in the 1920s and is arguably the oldest shopping center in Christchurch. The shops sell mostly local handicrafts, which are clearly based on foreign tourists as the main source of customers.

The street was quiet when we visited. When asked about some shopkeepers, they said people don't really come to the city, they tend to stay in the suburbs and go to the local shopping malls. We stayed here for two days and it was very free, it was on Friday and Saturday. It may be a vibrant street but sadly it is not. There are some beautiful buildings on the street too. I hope it will return to what it was.
