Experience something you may never have heard about.
The Repatriation Memorial Museum in Maizuru tells the story of the Japanese prisoners of war in Russia, their life in the camps and their struggle and eventually return to Japan. It is a story well kn...
The museum is very small and takes no more than 20-40 minutes. The exhibitions and explanations are well done however. They have regular Japanese explanations beside the exhibitions as well as English...
Repatriation Memorial Hall in Maizuru. It is a little far from the red brick warehouse group. I went by car. It is on a hill and overlooks the repatriation pier from the park next door. Here are exhibits that convey the misery of the war. Those who were detained overseas such as Siberia by prisoners of war and could not return to Japan for a long time even after the war, and spent between despair and hope 々 and their family records are heartwarming.
It's never a fun place. But I think it's quite worth a visit. The people who came back to Japan with the last thought from Siberia were able to learn that they were forced to live in a harsh environment. It's not big, so it doesn't take long to go around slowly 1. There are also volunteers, so I recommend listening to the explanation. You can see the stupidity of the war that Japan caused.

2 There is a record of experiencing detention by the former Soviet army after World War II. It's a place worth visiting once to see how hard it was.
