Hida Takayama, Japan | Rich Old Street x Hidden Hida Beef Shop, is it worth the three-hour drive? A must-have for carnivores! If you encounter some city pressure while traveling in Nagoya, take a trip north to escape the world! About a three-hour drive from Nagoya, Takayama is a famous old street town in Japan, full of nostalgia. It's said that "not eating Hida beef in Takayama means you haven't been here", but in fact, in addition to the Internet-popular Marumi barbecue restaurant, there is also a really hidden shop "Yamabu Shop" worth your special trip to find, eat really will not regret! Takayama Ancient Street—a second through the old times The most attractive thing about Takayama must be its large area of ancient buildings and old streets. Walking down it is like entering a Japanese drama scene. The wooden board houses, small souvenir shops, and old sake shops along the way are very sentimental, and you will meet locals wearing kimonos for photos. I recommend you to go to Sanmachi Old Street for a walk. It's great for taking pictures! Must-eat recommendation—Sanbu Shop | Grilled, CP value! Yamabu Shop (さんぶしょうてん) Address: 30 Kamisan-cho, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture Compared to popular barbecue restaurants in chains or online, the Shanbu Shop is really "low-key yet material", with a small pavement, probably only four or five tables. But the most amazing thing is that you can choose which piece of beef you want on the spot, and then order it, cut it, and grill it! Each piece of beef is cut to just the right thickness, evenly oiled, grilled out and melts in your mouth, the beef flavor is super heavy. Don't underestimate its small shop, the quality and price are definitely worth it! Even if you go alone, don’t be afraid of embarrassment (I see a lot of locals, sitting alone to grill beef, super chill). Photo spots around Takayama Ancient Street + small shop recommendations Attractions |Miyagawa Morning Market The market opens in the morning hours (approx. 07:00-11:30) selling fresh fruits, pickles and authentic crafts, with tourists and locals coming to grab a limited edition dessert. Coffee Shop | Hida Takayama Coffee House There are several Showa-style cafes in the city center. We recommend "Cafeバグパイプ" for authentic roasted coffee and handmade cakes. Tip: Alpine streets have never been too crowded. Although it is lively on holidays, it will be more comfortable to go on weekdays. Remember to stay and eat Hida beef while you're crazy about taking pictures! Transportation guide From Nagoya, take the JR Hida Special Express (ワイドビューひだ) directly to Takayama Station for about three hours. After exiting Takayama Station, you can walk to Old Street, which is very convenient. Extended itinerary: Ancient street + Hida beef + hot spring For deep relaxation, you can stay at a local hot spring inn for one night and slowly stroll through the ancient streets the next day.
