Ancient Villages
E29***70It takes about 2 hours via bus to get to Balagezong from Shangrila. From there you buy your entrance ticket and hop onto a bus which winds throughout the canyon, stopping frequently at villages and lookout spots. There is no other way to travel throughout this area, so you stay with the same bus and group all day long. Fortunately there was none of the blaring microphones that you are used to hearing when you see similar groups. There was a guide who lead us around a few sections (sans microphone), but he only spoke Chinese. It takes the whole day but was very much worth it. We went in the middle of December and the views of snow capped mountains and the surrounding environment were gorgeous.

Gaviota798Tiger leaping Gorge has been one of my favorite places in this part of China. You are free to track and hike without having to walk a million steps. the Gorge itself was heavy with rain when we went. If you don’t want to do the link hike you can have one of the home-stays or hostels take you up and enjoy the quiet night stay. We did go summer of 2020 so few people were traveling.

_GG***77We rented electric bikes to get here. Fun driving. But arrived quite late around 5.45pm. We only have until 6.30pm. After the entrance, we had to take the compulsory shuttle bus up to the temple. It was crowded so it’s hard to take any good photos left alone enjoying the sacred atmosphere in the temple. But the temple itself is great. I enjoyed every stairs up and every corners and turns. Should spend more time if you plan to come here so that you can wander around the village and the lake. Don’t just leave after the temple.

rwwishartTake the walk around the lake before going into the temple complex. You will find better spots for panoramas and the light is better when you go in the morning. Photos inside the temple halls are not allowed, so get what you can from the outside. Visiting takes maybe 3 hours if you want to wander over everything.

Shangri-La Travel Tips

About Shangri-La

Shangri-La is located in the northwestern part of Yunnan in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It is located at the confluence of the three provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet. Shangri-La was formerly known as Zhongdian County. It was renamed due to its similarity to the heavenly location described in James Hilton's 1933 novel "Lost Horizon". In Tibetan, Shangri-la means “Shang Mountain pass”. It is a pure land that perfectly preserves the area’s natural ecology and traditional culture. The grasslands surrounded by snow-capped mountains are full of bright sunshine and fresh air. There are also clear and tranquil lakes as well as magnificent temples and friendly Tibetans.
