Tahiti

Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia. It is a volcanic island with black stone beaches along its coast, which are suitable for surfing and sailing. Deep-sea fishing is also very popular. Volcanic ash has created fertile soil and there are tropical fruits everywhere. The tombs of the indigenous chiefs are the most spectacular historical sites. The tombs are located on Point Venus. Nearby there is a monument to the landing of the European explorers and an abandoned lighthouse. The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands displays the cultural background and traditional customs of Polynesia. There is also the Paul Gauguin Museum, which was built to commemorate the famous 19th century Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin.
