Ordering food in restaurants like The Crown and Anchor Restaurant in the UK requires a lot of imagination... because the menus are simple and plain as shown in the picture... The random set meal is delicious, the hummus is delicious, and the whole wheat bread is really authentic and crispy~

It takes imagination to order in a restaurant like The Crown and Anchor Restaurant in the UK...because the menu is as simple and simple as the picture...the messy set meal is delicious, the chickpea bean mud is delicious, the whole wheat bread is really real, very crispy ~
Oh what a lovely surprise :-) Entered the pub and ordered some welcome refreshment and asked for the allergen menu details but was informed they served gluten free fish and chips so I can't give any advice about what other gluten free menu items they serve as I was 'sold' on the fish and chips! Well let me tell you they are worth driving miles for......delicious :-) Absolutely top class meal....compliments to the chef. My partner loved his 'normal' fish and chips but I am sure mine were better.
Reading other reviews here does remind me of the saying that brown stuff does happen. Even the finest dining establishments must have their off days so the occasional trip-up must be expected. There is not a lot wrong with the Crown & Anchor. We only ate here during our one day stay on Holy Island so a comparison with the other gastro-pubs isn't possible. Suffice to say that it's a cut above usual pub grub but not fancy - good to see the oysters on the menu but equally for the less adventurous burger and chips. Depending on the time year it probably is best to book - at a pinch fitting your party in the bar area could be possible but the preference would be a reserved table in the back room (for me, the bar would have been too noisy to eat). At the end of the day, if you are staying on Holy Island, the choice is limited - but give this place a go - nothing to put me off eating there again should we return
When we walked in here for a lunch we nearly turned out and walked out again, not a good impression with décor etc well past it's sell by date. This place is really in need of a refurbishment, the loo door was virtually hanging off it's hinges, the paintwork is in a pretty dire state, the whole place a bit dark and gloomy. That said, our lunches were fine, pity the fabric of the place doesn't match up.
I have to say that I was almost put off eating here by some of the reviews, even though we'd booked, however, we went ahead. Really relieved to find that although there was only one bar man and one waitress, they were both friendly, very hard-working and efficient. No-one was kept waiting nor anything forgotten. However, the food was a little disappointing. Vegetables not fresh - and the mushy peas were actually garden peas that had been blitzed! Fish and chips fine, but a bit soggy inside and a bit too greasy (I know...it's deep fried..). Portions were large - so couldn't face dessert. If I could give 7/10 - so 3.5/5, I would.
