1469 It is a temple that feels the history of its founding in the year.

In the back of the large Matsumae Park, there was a temple town lined up with many temples. Hogenji Temple was built behind Matsumae Shrine in a corner of the temple town. This temple is a temple of the Soto sect that was moved from Okushiri. At the entrance of the temple, there was a mountain gate that made me feel a considerable history from the feeling of the trees used, but it seems to be the oldest gate in Hokkaido.
Several temples are lined up in Teramachi in the back of Matsumae Park. The temple behind Matsumae Shrine is Hogenji Temple here. In front of the mountain gate, there is an explanation board with the words "Hogenji Sanmon" written. According to it, this mountain gate is the oldest temple and shrine building in Hokkaido. Certainly, it was a quaint gate where you can feel the history of each tree, such as the pillars that make up the gate. The approach to the cedar trees from the mountain gate to the main hall also has a nice appearance.

It is located in a corner of Matsumaeji Town and behind Kozenji Temple and Ryuunin Temple, so there are fewer people than those temples, but this temple is no less than that, and the atmosphere of the cedar trees leading to the mountain gate and the main hall is wonderful. It is a temple. Not only during the cherry blossom season, but also in the precincts of Hogenji Temple, and depending on the timing of visit, the cherry blossoms of Kozenji Temple and Ryuunin were scattered, while there were still many cherry blossoms at Hogenji Temple. I enjoyed it.
Located in Matsumae Park, the mountain gate is the oldest existing temple and shrine architecture in Hokkaido, and it is said to be a valuable temple and shrine architecture to learn about the architectural style of the Matsumae region. When I passed through the mountain gate, there was Jizo and a grave at the temple. The rows of Yoshino cherry trees on the road next to the temple were beautiful.
I arrived when I was taking a walk around Matsumae Castle. Color 々 Even though there are temples, this place was a little more tasteful than others. There were a lot of Jizo, and I felt a mystery that I felt a little scary and dignified.
