The main body of the Hainan Provincial Museum consists of three simple rectangular shapes that unfold parallel to each other, floating above a pool of water. It is reminiscent of Hainan Province, which is located in the midst of the South China Sea. The shared hall space in the atrium on the first floor adopts a semi-open design, giving the building a sense of transparency. The Hainan Provincial Museum has four permanent exhibitions, namely 'Hainan's Collected Relics Exhibition,' 'Hainan History Exhibition,' 'Hainan Ethnic Minorities Exhibition,' and 'Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition,' which display Hainan's history, ethnic minority cultures, intangible cultural heritage, and cultural relics. Currently, the Hainan Museum is hosting a special exhibition titled 'The Eternal Style of Su Dongpo - Su Shi Themed Cultural Relics Exhibition,' where national treasures such as the authentic works of Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, and Cai Xiang from the 'Four Masters of the Song Dynasty' are on display. For convenient transportation, you can take buses No. 12, 27, 33, 43, 51, 52, 56, 67, 68, Tourist Bus 4, or Tourist Bus 5 to Hainan Square in Haikou city center, and you will arrive at the Hainan Provincial Museum.

The provincial museum in Haikou is currently undergoing expansion. When we visited, two exhibition halls were closed for renovation. Perhaps due to its coastal and island nature, the museum does not have an ancient relics exhibition hall. The entire museum is divided into six sections: the Huali Wood and Chen Xiang Pavilion, displays of Hainanese craftsmanship, cuisine, and opera, and one hall dedicated to the local ethnic minority culture. Hainan was anciently known as 'Nanhai Qidian' (with three water dots, the character is not found), established during the Han Dynasty, and until the Qing Dynasty, Hainan Island was required to pay tribute to the imperial court once every three years. Hainanese Huali wood has always been one of the 'earthly tributes' and gradually became a material for royal and noble furniture, at one point even considered a high-grade wood. Huali wood is very common in Hainan and was once the raw material for the local Li people to build houses and boats, as well as for daily utensils. The people of Hainan have the skill to make boats and utensils from a single piece of wood, without nails or rivets, a unique craft. Looking at agarwood, due to its complex, difficult, and lengthy process of formation, it is rare and scarce, and with its unique growing environment, it has been revered as the 'foremost of all fragrances' since ancient times. The formation of agarwood is complex, including fresh formation, ripe formation, shedding, and insect damage, and its shapes are very diverse. The customs of collecting and using agarwood, and the culture of incense burning, have added a touch of color to China's fragrance culture. The most popular among the public are traditional crafts, cuisine, and drama, which are influenced by the unique geographical environment, resulting in unique local handicrafts and delicacies, such as shell carving, coconut carving, bamboo and wood instruments, all of which are very characteristic of the local area. Hainan's food culture is characterized by its natural and original flavors, relying on the sea for food, incorporating fruits into dishes, selecting natural and fresh ingredients, and emphasizing a light and fresh taste. Of course, delicious food is accompanied by fine wines, which are also diverse, including Shanlan jade liquor, glutinous rice wine, sweet potato wine, sugarcane wine, honey wine, betel nut wine, coconut wine, deer turtle wine, etc. Finally, looking at the culture of Hainan's ethnic minorities, the local Li language is unique, and the festival celebrations have derived many characteristic dances and activities, such as turtle pulling, wood chopping dance, which are very interesting, and the clothing and jewelry of the local indigenous people also integrate the local environmental characteristics. Overall, after the visit, the Hainan Museum mainly presents intangible cultural heritage to visitors in various aspects, covering Hainanese traditional dance, opera, fine arts, skills, and customs, with its unique ethnic personality and aesthetic patterns. On this stop in Haikou, I visited the Hainan Provincial Museum for the third time. The reason was that I received a message from Haikou a few days ago. The Hainan Department of Culture and Tourism, in conjunction with the Palace Museum, is hosting the 'Eternal Charm, Ageless Dongpo - Su Shi Themed Cultural Relics Exhibition' from February 1 to April 30 at the Hainan Provincial Museum. So we specifically arranged this itinerary. After visiting, I felt it was very worthwhile and highly recommend friends visiting Hainan to take a special look. As it turns out, Mr. Dongpo's appeal is truly enormous. This is the first time I've seen so many people at the Hainan Provincial Museum. When I arrived at around ten in the morning on February 7, there was already a traffic jam from quite a distance away. Inside the museum, there was a line of several tens of meters to enter the Dongpo No. 1 Exhibition Hall. This exhibition displays 332 sets of Su Shi-themed cultural relics, including 154 sets of precious cultural relics, including 15 sets of first-class cultural relics, 56 sets of second-class cultural relics, and 83 sets of third-class cultural relics. Like the vast majority of public museums, it is free to reserve, conveniently located, and is at the cultural center of Haikou, Hainan. Although the place is not very large, it is very delicately designed. Compared with other museums, what is special is the underwater archaeology in the first floor exhibition hall. The relics here are different from the traditional unearthed ones, all are out of the water, and you can see marine plants attached to it. The second floor talks about the history of the end of the Han Dynasty in Hainan and the precious corroborative relics. Think of Su Wu's sentence 'Nanyue kills the Han envoy, slaughters it into nine counties; Wan Wang kills the Han envoy, the head county Beique; North Korea kills the Han envoy, and immediately executes it.' Other historical figures from different periods include Su Dongpo, Hai Rui, etc. These people who really paid for the people, even thousands of years later, can still be admired and respected by future generations to commemorate them. It's great, perhaps this is the tenacity and confidence of the Chinese civilization that has been passed down for thousands of years. The third floor is an introduction to the ethnic minorities in Hainan and a rest area. There is a free explanation at 10 am and 3 pm each. If you have plenty of time, you might as well make a reservation to participate. The cultural and creative shop at the door has a free stamping point, where you can bring a notebook to leave a souvenir for the trip.
