It was built in 1890’s whilst Hong Kong was under British rule as the site of British Army’s Whitfield Barracks, used until 1967. The construction was made adaptable to local climate through the use of local techniques and materials; pitched tarred Chinese tiled roofs, deep flattened arch colonnaded verandahs of each elevation, wooden shutters, raised semi basement under colonnade verandahs for better ventilation. Later it was restored and converted into museum complex and opened to public in 2005. It features exhibitions on the origins of archaeological treasure of Hong Kong dating back 6,000 years. "Light of Jinsha - The Ancient Shu Civilisation" exhibition at The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre The Jinsha site was a recent archaeological discovery in 2001. The major findings are mainly about the traditional cultural customs back in the ancient Shu of 4,000 years ago. The exhibition was not big but there were some interesting relics. My favourite one is the stone set of a tiger, a snake and a kneeling figurine with hands tied at the back. It is believed to be a human sacrifice activity, relating to religion or even occult. There were two grade-one national treasures, gold artefacts - a face-shaped gold foil and a frog-like gold foil. The most significant treasure unearthed at the site was the "gold foil sunbird", but only the replica was exhibited here instead. Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre is located in Kowloon Park, Hong Kong. Opened to visitors in October 2005, this Centre has several galleries such as a permanent exhibition gallery, thematic exhibition gallery, lecture hall, educational activity rooms, and reference library. In this Centre, visitors can witness Hong Kong's history from the prehistoric period until the modern era. You can see old pottery from different dynasties or what Hong Kong's first humans look like. In addition, This Centre also displays Chinese architecture, Western architecture, and modern architecture of Hong Kong from time to time. On the G floor, accessed by the escalator, there are some special collections of Hong Kong architecture, both Chinese and Western, from the past and present. Real objects, photos, videos, explanations, and some interactive games are available. It's a great place for kids or tourists to unlock the history of Hong Kong with a 🔑. Between the two buildings is a courtyard, 🈶️ with towering trees, where sitting leisurely is also very enjoyable.
