Established in the 8th century, Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine is mainly dedicated to the Inari Shrine, headed by the gods of Uga. Inari is a god of agriculture and commerce, and pilgrims come to worship for agricultural harvest, business prosperity, and safety. It is one of the most famous shrines in Kyoto area. At the entrance of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, there is a large birdhouse donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589, followed by the main hall and other buildings of the shrine. In here, you can also see a variety of fox statues, because the fox is regarded as the messenger of the gods. The fox-faced painted horse is a feature here. The most famous here is the intensive vermilion "Thousands of Tombs" behind the main shrine. It is one of the most representative landscapes in Kyoto and has appeared in the famous movie "Memoirs of Geisha".
