Pontocho is the traditional nightlife district in Kyoto. If you are lucky, then you might see a geisha tucked inside the bars or restaurants.
This is a lovely area of Kyoto for a 1-2 hours stroll in the late afternoon or early evening. The view of the river and its banks from the bridge is absolutely wonderful, and while most of the restaurants in Pontocho alley are tourist traps with ridiculously high prices and average food, the atmosphere alone is worth the visit.
Nice little street full of bars and restaurants. Also you sometimes see Geisha here.
A really great area of Gion, full of awesome restaurants, shops, and a great atmosphere. Offers some limited nightlife as well.
Once out of Yasaka Shrine, one would see a T-junction sort of traffic lined with taxis in abundance and restaurants. Walked straight ahead for about 10 min to reach the canal. Right after crossing it, first right turn into a narrow lane called Pontocho.5 mins down the stroll, we met a geisha walking right passed us.
