We usually recommend good and expensive restaurants in Lisbon but this time we had a group who was looking for a restaurant where they wouldn't feel tourists. "We want to feel like being local!". I had no doubt they were looking for a restaurant like "Maravilhas". I was alone and had to cook dinner, so decided to go as well. Don't look at the list. Just ask the owner for sugestions. We ate cod fish and duck with rice, as I sugested and they got suspicious. They were American and loved it. Splendid food and they told me that was exactly what they were looking for. They had never seen wine beeing served from a pitcher. Wonderfull staff.
Note - payment is only possible in cash. We were brought to O Maravilhas, an authentic Portuguese restaurant in the Alcantara harbour district by Luis, the owner of the Halcyon sailboat, after a sunset sailing cruise. Otherwise we would never have found it. The food was quite good and very cost effective. We loved the rice with duck in particular (arroz de pato). Afterwards we found our way back to our hotel easily by taking tram 15E on the main road just 100 meters from the restaurant, and switching to the subway at the Cais de Sodre station.
