About Lisbon

Lisbon, the westernmost European capital city, lies with the Sintra Mountains to the north and the Tagus River to the south. This old city with a long and storied history is built atop seven hills, its topography undulating between high and low. Buildings are constructed like mountain ranges, with old churches and monuments found throughout its dense medieval atmosphere. The new city district is a veritable forest of modern buildings. Even though the World Exposition Park is far away, it is still a good destination for for a leisurely walk. There is also the area of Belém replete with a nautical atmosphere, where you can walk and admire the exquisite architecture in the the glow of the setting sun. A sunset like this is absolutely unforgettable!

Avenida da Liberdade, or Liberty Avenue, is an essential road in central Lisbon, in Portugal. It is a 300 foot wide road, 3500 foot long, with ten paths isolated by person on foot asphalts improved with gardens. It joins Restauradores Square with the Marquis of Pombal Square. The Liberdade Avenue and the Restauradores Square have its starting points in a public park, Passeio Publico, introduced in the region in 1764, made by Pombaline architect Reinaldo Manuel. At first encompassed by a high wall, the recreation center was patched up in the 1830s and 1840s by architect Malaquias Ferreira Leal, who presented another course of action of the verdure and also wellsprings, a cascade and statues.

The Torre de Belem, or Belem Tower, was made back in the early 1500s. At one point constructed to function as a defensive tower, its sumptuous-looking facade features an outstanding example of Portugal's Manueline architecture with hints of Moorish influence visible in the balconies and arched windows. Explore the fascinating views on each of the four floors, from the vaulted cistern on the ground floor to the decorated terrace that adorns the highest floor. Go down into the dungeon to discover the cells that used to house prisoners, and climb the spiral staircase to the peak of the tower for a grand view of the surrounding area.
