When you come to Lisbon, you must spend a day walking around the old town, taking an old tram, eating an egg tart, and boarding the San Pedro viewing deck overlooking the old town. Lisbon is built on seven hills with high and low undulations, so it is also known as the City of Seven Hills. As early as the Neolithic Age, Iberians lived here, and later experienced the Romans and Moors. Today, there are still many ancient-style architectural sites in the city. Until the 12th century, King Alfonso I of Portugal took back the land from the Moors and settled here in 1256. By then, Lisbon has gradually developed into an important port city by virtue of its geographical advantages. The great maritime era since the 15th century has brought inexhaustible wealth to Lisbon. The prosperity of history has been accompanied by the decline. The great disaster of 1755: the Lisbon earthquake, almost took away all the bustling scenes here. The earthquake and the accompanying tsunami destroyed most of Lisbon's building facilities. The once bustling scenes no longer existed, and Lisbon's economy gradually became sluggish. Although the city was re-planned with the joint efforts of the Lisbon people, the destroyed houses and sites were also renovated and expanded. Today's old city of Lisbon is already a thriving scene, but if you find it carefully, you can still find many traces and stories left by the earthquake. Figure 1-2
