a beautiful palace in Madrid 😍🏰👑
I booked a walking tour online which includes tickets to the Royal Palace of Madrid.
I would so recommend doing so if you are going to Madrid because:
No. 1 you have a tour guide that walks with you while explaining the history of Madrid &
No. 2 you get to skip the queue for getting tickets and also entering the Royal Palace (very important because the palace is always really busy and the sun in Madrid is blazing hot 🥵)
The palace is well maintained, very pretty and grand and definitely is worth a visit. I would say the palace quite the perfect example of east meet west where you can see some oriental inspired decorations and wallpapers.
I personally do not have any prior knowledge about the Spanish royal family so it was nice to have a tour guide who explained everything to the finest details to us!!

The most beautiful park in Madrid
The El Retiro park is a must visit in Madrid. It is centrally located so it's an easy walk from anywhere in the city! it recently gained UNESCO world heritage status for its history.
In the middle of El Retiro is a huge lake that is popular with young families and couples. The park is also conveniently situated next to the Prado museum so you can visit both sites in one go!

Huge park in the heart of Madrid
I tried to visit the Prado museum, but hadn’t planned in advance and the ginormous line was a big turnoff.
Since the park is right next to it, I decided to go for a stroll and that was the best decision. When I visited in early November, the autumn leaves were all over the park and it was quite pleasant walking through the fallen leaves.
The Crystal palace (closed when I visited) and Velasquez Palace are also in the grounds and there’s no charge to visit them.
Definitely a great way to relax in Madrid.

Puerta del Sol Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Top 10 Must-Do Small Things on Your First Visit to Madrid, Spain
When it comes to Madrid, what comes to your mind first? I would think of Jolin Tsai's 'Madrid Wonders', and my initial understanding of the city also comes from this song. It truly is a city that needs to be savored slowly, not only does it have mouth-watering cuisine but also year-round cultural events, long hours of daylight, and more; however, the main thing to do when you come here is to complete these 10 small tasks!
1. Visit the Bear and the Strawberry Tree statue
Although its location might shift occasionally, it's still in Puerta del Sol, with no real impact; yes, Madrid has strawberry trees, but no bears.
2. Experience ice skating at El Retiro
Engaging in sports at El Retiro Park is often a challenge, but it's also to help everyone overcome.
3. Climb to the rooftop of the City Hall
At the corner of Cibeles, Gran Via, where Calle de Alcalá begins, you can take some really nice life photos, and also take the opportunity to have a drink, enjoying the view while you sip.
4. Take a photo with the Schweppes sign in the background
Definitely the first thing to do, take a photo from one of the zebra crossings, it really makes for a good shot (but safety first).
5. Jog along the Madrid Río
Jogging in El Retiro Park is also good, but enjoying this small river and the ever-growing animal population is also a pleasure.
6. Jump around in Kapital
With a total of 7 floors, each floor has different music, those who like this kind of atmosphere will love it.
7. Visit the Palacio de Cristal
The Crystal Palace is made of iron art and glass, a venue for displaying plants, and is quite famous locally.
8. Spend a day in the Malasaña neighborhood
It has a Bohemian vibe and is the coolest and most down-to-earth district in Madrid, very suitable for a city walk.
9. Go to the gastronomic paradise Mercado de San Miguel
It almost gathers specialties from all over Spain, whether it's Iberian ham, Galician seafood, Mediterranean dishes, Asturian cheese, etc., letting you fully satisfy your taste buds.
10. Watch a flamenco dance
What could be more Spanish than twirling skirts, crisp castanets, and fancy guitar playing? You can't help but dance along.
Madrid Citywalk|Puerta del Sol
The Puerta del Sol in Madrid is located in the heart of the Spanish capital, Madrid, and is also the central point of the Spanish highway network. The city gate marks the starting point of the national radial highway network from Madrid, the 0 kilometer mark, which is the starting point of all Spanish highways, with 10 streets radiating outwards, surrounded by various bustling shops, and is one of the favorite check-in spots for tourists visiting Madrid! The city gate faces the direction of the sunrise, hence the name Puerta del Sol.
The statue of the "Bear and the Strawberry Tree" on the square is the origin of the name Madrid (Madrid).
Legend has it that when Madrid was still a small village, there were often groups of bears in the surrounding forests, and there were large patches of strawberries in the forest. A little boy encountered a big bear while playing in the forest and hurriedly climbed a strawberry tree to avoid the big bear's attack. Just as the big bear was about to climb the strawberry tree, the little boy's mother came looking in the direction of the strawberry tree, but did not notice the big bear behind her. In a hurry, the little boy shouted loudly "mad rid! mad rid!" (Mom run! Mom run!). A passing hunter came to protect the little boy's mother upon hearing the sound. To commemorate the little boy's wit and bravery, the two words the child shouted to his mother were combined to form the name of this city - Madrid (Madrid), and the image of the bear and the strawberry tree became the emblem of Madrid, and this iconic sculpture is located in the Puerta del Sol.
The most eye-catching place in the center of the square is the equestrian statue of King Carlos III of Spain (renovated). In the 18th century, this king carried out a series of improvement projects on Madrid's infrastructure, promoting the modernization of the city.
Every New Year's Eve, as the last 12 seconds of the New Year ring out, people gather in the Puerta del Sol. With each loud bell, they eat a grape, and at the moment the last New Year's bell rings, they swallow the 12 grapes in their mouths smoothly, representing a lucky year next year.
The Time Guardian of Madrid: Real Casa de Correos
In the heart of Madrid, the footsteps of time echo in Puerta del Sol, telling stories of the past. Here stands a historical building - Real Casa de Correos, like a noble elder, overlooking this passionate city with grace.🎩✨
It is not only a stone wall, but also the bell of the past. Each brick and tile is engraved with a silent watch over people. The building was born for postal services in the 18th century, and now it has become a symbol of the Madrid Autonomous Region government, with the entire building writing verses of power and responsibility like a poem.📜🏰
The bell tower is tall, wearing the hat of the era with ease. Its bell is not only the timekeeper of time, but also the messenger of New Year's hope. On New Year's Eve, the ticking of the hour clock and the sweet scent of grapes weave a melody of happiness, accompanied by people's laughter and songs, welcoming a new page together.🕰️🍇
Surrounding this historical relic is the colorful painting of modern life: bustling crowds, twinkling neon lights, and the fragrant snack stalls, making this corner full of romance and vitality. Every corner is a poem, every moment is a pleasure.🌆🛍️
Real Casa de Correos, is not only the timekeeper of Madrid, but also the bridge connecting the past and the future, poetry and reality, waiting for every traveler to listen to its story with their heart.🌉💕

Beautiful Christmas lights in Madrid
Although travelling in the winter can be troublesome - you need to pack thicker clothes which makes your luggage heavier and the day is much shorter, you get Christmas lights, Christmas markets and festive events that you don’t have in the summer.
If you walk by Gran Via, Retiro and most robust areas in Madrid, you instantly feel the joy and excitement of the winter season with the festive songs that being played in shops and the decorations in the street and department stores.
The winter in Madrid isn’t horribly cold (around 10 degree on average) - you get to feel the change of season but still manage to do most outdoor activities without feeling frozen.
