The Mexican vegeburger is wonderful
Sadly, Billy Ahearn and Suspenders are out of business. Friday May 23, 2014 was their last day, after the property owners refused to offer a new lease. Too bad, because it was a great gathering place for lunch and evenings, with a great rectangular bar, enjoyable regulars, attentive bartenders, and Billy Ahearn, a former FDNY lieutenant who opened the place 27 years ago. They survived the 1993 WTC attack, and the 9/11 destruction and were very loyal to the firemen and police who had to find a place to rest when digging at Ground Zero. NYC has lost another good local bit of color and comfort. Goodbye to all my lunch regulars!
- I've always loved to have crab cake, which is available on the menu. I had the crab cake sandwich and fries. The crab cake was flavorful and generous with crabmeat. - The music was not too loud, which is good because we could chat with friends while enjoying food during the happy hour. The waitress was very friendly and the food was served quite fast.
I can only give this 2 stars because the food was great. It took us almost two hours to eat lunch here. Our server was nice to begin with, but never returned. We asked for the owner/manager several times and received a variety of answers as to why we could not see him, one being he was in a meeting. LOL. However, he sent us a free drink, from his meeting I suppose. After we asked for the manager and an hour later, our server returned and advised he had ben on his hour lunch break. however, no one assisted us in the hour he was MIA. Unless, you have hours for lunch, do not go here. Service is horrific and no one cares!
