It was originally built for the city to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games at a cost of £110 million with the intention of it becoming a new home for Manchester City, who were looking to vacate their Maine Road ground. Subsequently, the club spent in excess of £20 million in removing the running track and extending the stands closer to the playing surface.
