About Otaru: Otaru is a famous port city in Hokkaido. It was once the center of economic development and the bustling commercial capital of Hokkaido. It is even known as the “Northern Wall Street” of Japan and is now a well-known tourist town and City of Romance. The Otaru Canal can be said to be a legacy of the prosperous historical period. There are still hundred year old extant warehouse buildings located along the riverbanks. Under the reflected lights of kerosene lamps, the canal and the nearby red brick warehouses create an exotic romantic atmosphere. The taste of history is intoxicating. Otaru has a very mature glass industry, so consider purchasing some of the exquisite glass work on your visit. The 1995 Japanese film Love Letter was set in Otaru and many fans like to come here to get a feel for the movie's scenic backdrop.
