Had the good fortune to do a self-driving tour through Central Gansu Province and Northern Qinghai Province. If you’re in China for a while and have a foreign driver’s license, you can apply for a Chinese one. It requires jumping through some annoying hoops but then you can rent a car when you travel. We drove up to Qilian Mountain in Qinghai and to the famous 4120m Large Winter Tree pass.
