Zhaotong Dashanbao is a famous scenic spot in Zhaoyang District, Zhaotong City. Every year at the end of October, a large number of black-necked cranes migrate from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to winter here, leaving in early April the following year. Black-necked cranes are the only crane species in the world living on the plateau. In order to better protect this rare animal, Dashanbao National Black-necked Crane Nature Reserve was established in 2003. Since then, Dashanbao has become a paradise for black-necked cranes. The Dashanbao Eco-tourism Zone has two main scenic spots: Jigongshan Grand Canyon and Haizi. Known for its ecological and natural scenery such as black-necked cranes, wetlands, meadows, canyons, sea of clouds, sunrise, sunset, Buddha light, etc., it is a mountain-type scenic tourist area integrating nature reserves and natural landscapes. In 2003, it was approved as a “National Nature Reserve for Black-necked Crane” and in 2004 it was listed on the “Wetlands of International Importance”.
