Before 1906, Harbin was only a small fishing village on the banks of the Songhua River where the local people were fishing and hunting. With the construction of the Middle East Railway, it gradually became a gathering place for Russian expatriates. Many Russian Jews came here to do business. Many baroque architecture followed.
