The Brazilian Independence Monument, adjacent to the Parks and Palace Museum, was established in 1922 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the independence of King Pedro I of Brazil in 1822. The flame in front has not been broken since 1922. Under the monument is the coffin of the king and his wife.
