Since the eighteenth century, because of its strategic importance, Hawaii has become the focus of the struggle between Japan and the United States. A large number of immigrants from both sides have settled in Hawaii. Although the Americans eventually annexed Hawaii, a third of the Japanese population made Japanese culture part of Hawaii.
