The monastery of Jeronimos, built in 1502, is the best example of the peak period of Portuguese art. It was in the Belen district, where I lived near the central railway station, so I took the bus at the door for about half an hour (stop directly at the church door). The magnificent cathedral, which stood still after an unprecedented earthquake, was a miracle of the time. The sarcophagus of poet Camus and navigator Da Gama was also placed for visitors to admire.
