The Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所, Kyōto-gosho) is the former ruling palace of the Emperor of Japan. Since the Meiji Restoration in 1869, the Emperors have resided at the Tokyo Imperial Palace, while the preservation of the Kyoto Imperial Palace was ordered in 1877.Today, the grounds are open to the public, and the Imperial Household Agency hosts public tours of the buildings several times a day.

We booked in advance and were provided free of charge with a guided tour, with audio, of this beautiful and hostoric location

Beautiful! The classic traditional amazingly thick thatched roof, beautifully proportioned and detailed timber buildings. The ultimate in traditional Japanese architecture. Set in lavish and manicured gardens.

Lucky us, we caught the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom. So beautiful to see the patches of pink exploding throughout the city.
