It is still necessary to have a tour guide to explain it to understand, otherwise you will see a few pavilions on the square. This is also what has been left by several wars, and the surrounding area is a famous attraction.

This very beautiful obelisk is in the center on the Sultanamet District only a short walk from the main square. The obelisk taken from Egypt marked on end of the chariot course that use to stand here.

The Obelisk of Theodosius was originally a part of the temple of Karnak in Egypt, but Constantius II had it shipped over in order to commemorate his 20 years on the throne. It has inscriptions on it and some bas reliefs which are interesting. It is one of the few things that are left on the original hippodrome.

The obelisk itself is impressive enough, but reading its history will make you appreciate it even more. Very cool location in the ancient hippodrome, surrounded by cute souvenir shops.

The Obelisk of Theodosius is the Ancient Egyptian obelisk of Pharaoh Tutmoses III, which was re-erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople (known today as At Meydanı or Sultanahmet Meydanı, in Istanbul) by the Roman emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century AD.

The obelisk is nice, but not very different from other obelisks. But I like the Hippodrom, with it's flowers everywhere and the nice atmosphere.
