Yuanmingyuan was founded in 1709 (the forty-eighth year of Kangxi) and was first given by Emperor Kangxi to Emperor Yuyu's four sons. After Yongzheng assumed the throne in 1722, the original garden was expanded and Zhengda Guangming Hall, Diligence Hall and Cabinet Hall were built in the south of the garden. On October 6, 1860, the British and French allied forces looted the Yuanmingyuan Garden, looted cultural relics and burned them. They wanted to be repaired when Tongzhi Emperor was emperor. They were forced to stop and rebuild other buildings because of financial difficulties. After the eight-nation coalition forces, they were attacked by bandits and eventually turned into ruins. Yuanmingyuan, founded and operated in the Qing Dynasty for more than 150 years, has enjoyed worldwide fame for its vast regional scale, outstanding construction techniques, exquisite architectural scenery, rich cultural collection and profound national cultural connotations. It is known as "the model of all gardening arts" and as "the model of ideal and art" by Victor Hugo, a French writer. Nowadays, when we enter the Yuanmingyuan Garden, which bears too much history and too much sadness, we can see the weak pillars and ancient trees all telling us about its past. The garden is bright and old, but it is also round.
