The Governor's Office (also known as Rideau Hall) was founded in 1867 by Canada, but the head of state has always been the British monarch, and the Governor exercises power on behalf of Canada. The Riddot Canal, named after the Riddot Canal, was built in 1838 by Thomas McKay, a Scottish businessman. In 1864, Ottawa was designated as the capital (then the provincial capital) and rented as the temporary residence of Governor Lord Monck, then officially became the Governor's Palace of Canada.
