Sacramento is the Spanish word for sacrament, the name that Spaniards originally gave to the Central Valley and the Sacramento River when they arrived in the area, and then Fort Sutter became a municipality. The Chinese translation of the name "Sacramento" originated from the 19th century Chinese Cantonese Chinese to "Sacramento", and is still the only Chinese name used by local Chinese and Chinese media, as well as Taiwan, but now mainland China and Hong Kong are translated as "Sacramento". Older overseas Chinese also commonly call Sagarmendu "two", compared to "big" to San Francisco, and "three" to Stockton, but in recent years new immigrants have used the name less.
