Scuola Grande di San Rocco was founded as a charitable organization for the sick. It was built between 1515 and 1549 in honour of San Roco who was the patron saint of contagious diseases. Many people believed that by donating money to build the Scuola di San Rocco they would be spared from the plague. Tintoretto was commissioned to decorate the walls and the ceilings in 1564 and he did a remarkable job. The cycle of paintings in Sala dell’Albergo, the Upper Hall and the Ground Hall are all masterpieces by him. The interior wall and ceiling frescoes are absolutely beautiful.
