By far the best place in Rome to stay and live amongst the locals. The food options were the best in Rome and far less expensive than touristy areas if you can stumble your way through the translator. Very few people spoke much English, but they were very friendly and made us feel at home. Your best bet if you are not staying in Trastevere is to take a cab and then wander around looking for non-English menus and where the locals are eating.

A river is just across from the Flower Square (Campo del Fiori) area in the center of Rome. There are restaurants, bars and shops on the narrow streets. There are several special attractions to see, but mainly a pleasant stroll.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Rome, look no further from a quaint and soulful Roman district of Trastevere. This atmospheric neighborhood with great nightlife is located on the west bank of the Tiber, hence its name ( tras = across, tevere = Tiber). It is very quiet during the day, pleasently removed from the crowds and hustle and bustle of the city, yet conveniently located within walking distance from the Historic Center, the Vatican City and Spanish Steps. Tram 8 will take you to Piazza Venezia and from there it's just a hop to Capitoline Hill, Roman Forum, Colosseum, etc. Though no longer hidden this village - like neighborhood truly is a gem. Maze of cobblestoned streets perfect for aimless walks, taking photos and just soaking up the atmosphere. At night, its many trendy cocktail bars, pubs and restaurants open the door and tourists and locals fill the streets and small, intimate squares. There's no lack of tourist sights in Trastevere. One of the most beautiful and oldest churches is located in Trastevere's central piazza - Santa Maria in Trastevere. Interior is quite a sight - nave is held by 21 ancient Roman columns, while gold mosaics dating back to the 12th century adorne the walls. Another church worth your time is Santa Cecilia in Trastevere built over ancient houses, one of them probably belonging to the saint. Janiculum Hill is perfect for a sunset stroll and offers great views of Rome. Streets of Trastevere are lined with great trattorias, one of them is Cave Canem in Piazza di San Calisto. Delicious pizzas and pastas ataffordable prices. After dinner, take a short walk to Tiramisu Trastevere one of the best places in the city to try this famous Italian dessert.

During our visit to the Colosseum in Rome, we went to Trastville. High-rise buildings in narrow streets provide shade. There is a famous leather shop. Trastifle occupies the left bank of the Tiber River south of Borgo, which is a small medieval street.
