Legend has it that King Kuna (King Ku Na) once invited Sukhothai's high monk Sumatara (Sumana Thera) to Chiang Mai to study, and also provided the Royal Garden the current location of Songda Temple (Wat Suan Dok), and built a temple to let him live here. Songda Temple was completed in 1371 AD. Sumanatara became the first abbot of the temple.
