Attractions in Sapporo

Tanukikoji Shopping Street is a famous shopping street in the central district of Sapporo in Hokkaido. Boasting a history of over 100 years and an overhead glass ceiling, this spacious and clean street is a comfortable place to shop. There are numerous fashion and electronics stores, recreation halls, cinemas, and restaurants, all of which are very popular with young people.

Sapporo TV Tower is erected on the east side of Odori Park. It is the icon of Odori Park and a landmark of Sapporo. Sapporo TV Tower used to be a signal receiver and retransmission facility, but it is now retired. Now it is outfitted with an observation deck, a souvenir shop, and restaurants. Climb the tower and enjoy a 360-degree view of Sapporo and the dazzling lights of the tower at night.

Hokkaido University was established in 1876 and is formerly known as Sapporo Agricultural College. There are many areas within the university designated as culturally significant and worth visiting, such as the Agricultural Department's Farm 2, the Clarke Statue, and Poplar Avenue. The grand elm, ginkgo, and poplar trees in the vicinity have earned Hokkaido University the nickname the 'elm campus'. The majority of historical buildings are of European-style (many of Nordic flavor) and are very popular with tourists.

Sapporo Clock Tower is a clock tower situated in the heart of Sapporo. Its construction began in 1878, and was a symbol of westernization in the 19th century and of the beginning of major development in Hokkaido. The chimes of the tower has continued for over a hundred years and has become a symbol of Sapporo. The tower's construction style is simple: white and using wood. The clock at the top has four clock faces.

Mt. Moiwa is located near downtown Sapporo and surrounded by an old-growth forest. The maple trees' foliage changes color as the seasons change from spring to autumn, and in the winter a white blanket of snow is draped over the mountain. It is a scene of unique beauty that attracts people all year round. Visitors can access the peak of Mt. Moiwa by riding the ropeway and can then take in the full view of Sapporo City from the observatory. The night view is absolutely breathtaking. Besides riding the cable car, visitors can also conquer Mt. Moiwa on foot. Walking is a great way to enjoy the mountain loved by Sapporo locals.
