Additional Information

Introduction

The Torre del Oro, or “Tower of Gold” in Spanish, is a military watchtower overlooking Seville in southern Spain. Some say that the gold found in the New World was stored here, giving the tower its nickname. Built by the Almohad dynasty in the early 13th century, it was used as a means of controlling Seville and defending it from invaders, however Christian forces eventually defeated the Muslim occupants during the Middle Ages. After a history of near abandonment, the tower eventually became a restored naval museum, an examination of the history of Seville and its adjacent river.
