Lake Wanaka. It is a lake formed by the melting of glaciers more than 10,000 years ago and is the fourth largest lake in New Zealand. Here is inaccessible since ancient times, and indigenous Maori people only occasionally pass by. In 1853, the first European came to Lake Wanaka, but it was not until 1863 that there was a fixed inhabitant here, where they were grazing sheep. The tourism industry here began in 1867. That year, the first hotel was built in the town of Wanaka, south of Lake Wanaka. Today's Wanaka area is already a famous tourist destination. People come here to ski in winter and spend the summer here. It also hosted a number of film and television crews including The Lord of the Rings to film the scene. Many towns in New Zealand are built along the lake. The town is small. Supermarket restaurants are in the center of the town. Across the road is Lake Wanaka, where people chat, drink and camp.
