Originally established in 1111 A.D. by the Northern Song Dynasty, Donglin College is a National Heritage Conservation Site that served as an influential learning center during the Zheng He Period. It was the academy where the famous philosopher and scholar Yang Shi taught students and officials on matters of politics, intellectual thought and scholarship. Later, other prominent members of the Ming Dynasty gathered at Donglin College to further discuss political events, reforming society, moral evaluations and natural consequences with the educated elite. The distinguished school also prepared students for careers in public affairs. It has had many instances of needing major repairs, with several efforts toward restoration throughout the era of the Donglin movement and afterwards. Centuries later, with the financial backing of subsequent dynasties and local officials, Donglin College has been reconstructed and redecorated to showcase nice gardens and classrooms for any visitors looking for a quiet reading room in a peaceful setting.
