Named Yong Lake in ancient times, the South Lake is listed as a provincial natural scenic reserve. It is also the race course of the international dragon boat race. Dragon Hill is located on the south shore of the South Lake, with nine smaller hills in front of it, extending the mountain range towards Dongtong Lake. The formation is said to look like a dragon chasing nine tortoises. Since ancient times, South Lake has been a place where the scholarly class have gone for leisurely boat ride, to drink alcohol and tea, and to compose poetry. Currently South Lake has become a newly developed national water sports center. Sport facilities include motorboats and water bicycles. The annual Yueyang International Dragonboat Race is conducted here.
