🇧🇭 Bahrain, Saar
Saar is a district in western Manama perfect for archaeology enthusiasts, as it contains traces of the nearly 4,000-year-old Dilmun civilization, including an ancient settlement, temple, and cemetery all in the same area. 📅 Saar 1-Day Itinerary
1. Dilmun Settlement of Saar 🏺
Start your morning at the Dilmun Settlement of Saar, the city's most important highlight.
This area is the ruins of an early Dilmun settlement, approximately 4,000 years old. Excavations have revealed a relatively clear city plan, including streets, alleys, houses, central areas, and a temple on a high point within the community.
UNESCO states that the ancient city covers approximately 2.25 hectares and is one of the most extensively excavated Dilmun settlements in Bahrain. This allows us to still get a glimpse of how people lived here thousands of years ago.
Recommended time: 8:00 AM–9:30 AM
Allow approximately 1–1.5 hours
⸻
2. Saar Temple
Continue to Saar Temple, part of the ancient settlement.
The temple is situated on a high point of the settlement and was an important center of the community during the Dilmun era. Archaeological data indicates that the Saar settlement primarily dates back to approximately 1900–1700 BC.
Upon arrival, observe the walls and narrow alleys surrounding the temple; this will provide a clearer view of the ancient city's structure than simply looking at the building itself.
Touring time: 30–45 minutes
⸻
3. Saar Ancient Burial Complex ⚱️
From the settlement, proceed to the Saar Ancient Burial Complex Ruins.
Around Saar are various types of cemeteries, particularly the group known as Honeycomb Cemeteries, which consist of interconnected burial chambers resembling a beehive. This style is considered a distinctive archaeological feature of Bahrain.
The Saar area also includes the North Burial Complex, the South Burial Complex, and individual burial mounds scattered around.
Visiting time: 45 minutes–1 hour
📌 Do not climb or walk on the walls and structures of the burial mounds, as these are archaeological sites.
⸻
4. Dilmun Burial Mounds
If you have time, you can visit the nearby Dilmun Burial Mounds to see more burial mounds.
The Dilmun burial mounds are considered the heart of Bahraini history. A UNESCO World Heritage Site across the west coast of the island comprises approximately 11,774 mounds in 21 archaeological sites, built around 2200–1750 BC.
However, it's important to note that Saar Heritage Park has been on the UNESCO Tentative List since 2001 and is not yet a officially registered World Heritage Site, so it shouldn't be directly referred to as a “UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
⸻
🍴 Lunchtime
After visiting the archaeological sites I recommend returning to the modern Saar area for lunch or a cafe break, as the midday sun can be quite strong.
This area has more restaurants than the archaeological site, including Arabic, Indian, cafes, and international cuisine.
⸻
5. Saar Mall 🛍️
End your afternoon leisurely at Saar Mall.
It's not a must-see landmark, but it's perfect for escaping the heat, having coffee, shopping, or experiencing the modern atmosphere of Saar.
If you don't like malls, you can skip this and end your trip after the archaeological site for a more worthwhile experience.
