1. What does this notice cover?
This policy describes how Trip.com will make use of your data when you interact with us and any of Trip.com websites (including any affiliated sites), mobile apps, and other services operated by us (hereafter collectively referred to as the “Services”) and when you purchase services from us.
It also describes your data protection rights, including the right to object to some of the processing which we carry out. More information about your rights, and how to exercise them, is set out in section 5 below.
Trip.com collects and uses the information you provide to us directly to provide you with the services you request. For example, you may provide us your mobile number, email, or other information when you register a Trip.com account. When booking flight or train tickets, or using our car rental service, you may provide passenger names, ID document numbers and the contact person’s name, mobile number, email and other information. When booking hotels and tickets for tourist attractions, you may provide the travellers' names, contact person’s name, mobile number, and email, etc. When paying for travel products, you may provide your bank card number, the mobile number previously provided to the bank, or your credit card number, cardholder name, expiry date, etc.
To customize the services we provide you, we may also collect information about your travel plans and preferences which includes your meal requirements, departure date, check-in and check-out times, seat choice, ticket choice, insurance choice, and your selection of other services (such as car rental, attraction tickets, and travel guides, etc.) provided by Trip.com.
If you need to get in touch with our customer support team or reach out to us through other means (such as through social media) we will collect information from you there too, such as your name and contact information. For quality, training and dispute resolution purposes, we may record phone conversations when you call us, when you answer our calls or when you have a conversation with our partner providers via our platform.
You may also participate in referral programs or prize promotions, the details of which may be found on the event page. Doing so will also mean providing us with your name and contact information. In addition to this, you can provide us with feedback or ask for help with using Trip.com’s travel services.
You may be traveling with other guests or making a booking on someone else’s behalf, in which case you will provide similar details to Trip.com. However, we would like to remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure that the person or people whose personal data you have provided are aware that you’ve done so, and have agreed to your sharing of their personal data with Trip.com for these purposes.

Your phone conversations with our customer support staff, both answering our calls and calling us, may be recorded, as well as your calls (via VOIP or other virtual numbers) with our partner providers via our platform (including hotels, ticket and tour service providers). We may rely on these recordings to monitor the quality of our customer support, check the accuracy of the information you provide for fraud prevention and transaction security, or serve the purpose of internal staff training. This is to inform other travellers about the quality of the travel product you used, the destination you chose, or the other services you have used. We will also aggregate your guest review data with feedback from other customers in order to sort and prioritize guest reviews. We may use the information in your reviews or in other destination-related information you share with us in an anonymous form, unless you have included this information in your public profile. This is to help travellers like you find the right destination and the best accommodation to suit them. Where you choose to post a public review, we may share information with the relevant Travel Service Providers to understand your experience. For being able to use our Services and/or enter into a contract with us, the provision of data is mandatory: if relevant data is not provided, then we will not be able to use our Services and/or enter into a contract with you. We have highlighted above the data for which the provision is optional.
There are instances where we have a legitimate interest to use your data. Our legitimate interest will vary depending on what we are using your data for, and we explain above what the interest is and how it relates to the processing operations that we are carrying out. Where we process personal data on the basis of a legitimate interest, then – as required by data protection law – we have carried out a balancing test to document our interests, to consider what the impact of the processing will be on individuals and to determine whether individuals’ interests outweigh our interests in the processing taking place.
Information We Receive Through Other Sources
Sometimes, we receive information about you from third parties. In particular, we will also obtain your information from affiliates and business partners.
For example, when you make a booking or reservation through the website or mobile app of one of our affiliates or business partners, your booking or reservation information with them might be forwarded to us so that we can process your booking and ensure its success. Also, we allow you to log into Trip.com with your social media account, and with your consent (you grant authorization to the social platform), your personal data (e.g., openid, name, nickname, email address, profile photo) will be shared with us through that social platform.

Trip.com automatically collects user-related information during service use for security, service provision, claim response, dispute resolution, and restriction of legal and terms violations. The specific details are as follows.

3. How we share your personal data?

4. Where we transfer your personal data?
Personal data that we collect from you may be transferred to and stored at a destination outside the UK/EEA. Due to the global nature of our business, your personal data will be disclosed to our Travel Service Providers, third-party vendors, financial institutions and third-party payment processors, business partners, advertising partners and affiliates within our group, government authorities, law enforcement, regulators and fraud prevention agencies, and prospective buyers and their advisers outside of the UK and the EEA. Where these locations do not provide an adequate level of data protection, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect the transfer of your personal data to these countries. These rights may be limited, for example if fulfilling your request would reveal personal data about another person, or if you ask us to delete information which we are required by law or have compelling legitimate interests to keep. Wherever we rely on your consent, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal. We may however have other legal grounds for processing your data for other purposes, such as those set out above.
In some cases, we are able to send you direct marketing without your consent, where we rely on our legitimate interests. You have an absolute right to opt-out of direct marketing, or profiling we carry out for direct marketing, at any time. You can do this by following the instructions in the communication where this is an electronic message (e.g. clicking the unsubscribe link contained at the bottom of marketing emails), by adjusting the notification settings in your account profile on Trip.com website or app, or by contacting us using the details set out below.
We are committed to investigating and resolving complaints about our collection or use of your personal data. To make a complaint, please clearly provide the following information to help us address the issue effectively:
If you are not satisfied with our resolution of your complaint, you have the right to complain to a data protection authority in the country that you reside in or, the country of your place of work or the country where the alleged infringement took place.
We aim to resolve all issues in a timely manner, or as mandated by applicable law, but if this is not possible because a more detailed investigation is required, we will keep in regular contact with you to ensure that you are kept informed of the resolution of your matter.
6. How long we retain your personal data?
Where Trip.com processes your personal data as allowed by law or with your consent, Trip.com will store your personal data i) only for as long as is required to fulfil the purposes mentioned previously, ii) until you object to our use of your personal data (where Trip.com has a legitimate interest in using your personal data), or iii) until you withdraw your consent, whichever is applicable. However, if Trip.com is required to retain your personal data by law or to address legal claims, Trip.com will retain your personal data until the end of the legally required period or until the claims in question have been settled. Specifically:
Where we process your data in relation to your account, we do this for as long as you are a user of Trip.com and as allowed by applicable laws after this. If you request data deletion when deleting your account, we will respond to your request in accordance with applicable laws.
Where we process personal data for marketing purposes or with your consent, we process the data until you ask us to stop and for a short period after this to allow us to implement your requests. We also keep a record of the fact that you have asked us not to send you direct marketing or to process your data indefinitely so that we can respect your request in future.
Where we process your sensitive personal data (i.e., student verification documents and health information for refund or change), we will automatically delete them on a rolling basis after the necessary period for the purposes above.
7. Information Security and Protection
Trip.com attaches great importance to information security and has set up a dedicated team for this. We strive to protect your personal data and have taken appropriate managerial, technological, and physical security measures.
In terms of the data life cycle, we have established security measures for all stages including data collection, storage, display, processing, use, and destruction. We take different control measures according to the level of information sensitivity, including but not limited to access control, SSL encryption transmission, and high-level encryption algorithms for encrypted storage, in order to mask the sensitive information to be displayed, etc. We have obtained ISO 27001, PCI DSS, and SOC2 Type 2 certifications. We rely on currently available technologies and take appropriate security measures to protect your information.
In the unlikely event of a data breach affecting your personal data, we will inform you in accordance with laws and regulations by email or other means.
8. Updates to this privacy notice
We reserve the right to update this privacy notice at any time, and we will provide you with a new privacy notice when we make any substantial updates. We may also notify you in other ways from time to time about the processing of your personal data.
