Anna Bogutsyaka on the enduring appeal of horror | Stoke Newington Bookshop
Nov 13, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
With spooky season's long shadow ever-growing we're looking forward to welcoming Anna Bogutsyaka into the shop to talk all things horror! The curator and author of Unlikeable Female Characters will be discussing her new book Feeding The Monster. Horror has been embraced by mainstream pop culture more than ever before, with horror characters and aesthetics infecting TV, music videos and even TikTok trends. Yet even with the commercial and critical success of The Babadook, Hereditary, Get Out, The Haunting of Hill House, Yellowjackets and countless other horror films and TV series over the last few years, loving the genre still prompts the question: what’s wrong with you? In Feeding the Monster, Anna Bogutskaya dispels the notion that there is something not quite right about the people who make and consume horror once and for all by examining how horror responds to and fuels our feelings of fear, anxiety, pain, hunger and power. Anna Bogutskaya is a freelance critic, author, film programmer and creative producer. She writes for BBC Culture, Guardian, MUBI, the Face, TimeOut, amongst others, and programmes films for BFI, Edinburgh Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. She produces and hosts The Final Girls podcast, created and produced the horror anthology podcast Eerie and has produced podcasts for Paramount, Studiocanal, BFI and Vertigo Releasing, as well as contributing to many others.

40 Years of Wasafiri: An Exhibition & Two Editors in Conversation | BLOC
Nov 20, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
As part of its 40th anniversary year celebrations, Wasafiri, the leading magazine of international contemporary writing since 1984, is proud to host an exhibition, and its two editors – Dr. Susheila Nasta (Founding Editor) and Dr. Sana Goyal (Editor & Publishing Director) – in conversation for the first time. In collaboration with Angelique Golding – a PhD student on the Wasafiri archives, based at Queen Mary University of London – who is the lead curator of the exhibition, and will chair the conversation, this engaging and enlightening evening will chart and trace Wasafiri’s history, trajectory, editorial strategy, and vision over forty years. How do literary magazines survive and thrive? What kinds of editorial and curatorial choices and decisions do literary editors make, and why? Challenges aside, what role has Wasafiri played in championing and platforming new critical and creative voices from across the globe? And what stories and histories does the archive hold? The event promises to shed light on precarious and pivotal moments in the magazine's life and times, including its adaptive strategies in the face of funding challenges and political shifts over four decades, and hopes to juxtapose the magazine's past with its present and future — enriched by sounds and images from the archives. Join us for an evening of reflection and celebration – by way of the archives – as we mark 40 years of Wasafiri. When: 20 November, 2024, 7-8.30pm
Where: BLOC, Mile End Campus, Queen Mary University of London Tickets: Free, booking required. Optional donations to Wasafiri. This event is supported by the Queen Mary University of London Centre for Creative Collaboration About the speakers Angelique Golding is a LAHP Collaborative Doctoral student working with Wasafiri on our 40th anniversary projects with a focus on the archive, which forms the basis of her research. After completing a Master’s in Black British Writing at Goldsmiths University, Angelique won a studentship to undertake a PhD at Queen Mary University of London in collaboration with Wasafiri and the British Library. Her research, completing in December 2024, draws on methodologies from postcolonial, global literary and archival studies combined with book and magazine history. Sana Goyal is the Editor and Publishing Director of Wasafiri. She has an MA in Postcolonial Studies and a PhD in literary prizes from SOAS, University of London. She was formerly Deputy Editor at Wasafiri, Publicity Manager at Tilted Axis Press, and Marketing and Outreach Officer at Poetry Birmingham Literary Journal. Her reviews have appeared in The Guardian, Financial Times, Times Literary Supplement, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Poetry Review, Vogue India, and elsewhere. She was a judge for the 2022 Orwell Prize for Political Fiction and 2023 Republic of Consciousness Prize and is a judge for the 2025 International Booker Prize. Susheila Nasta is a writer, presenter, literary activist, and critic. She founded Wasafiri in 1984, and her recent works include: India in Britain (Palgrave, 2012), Asian Britain: A Photographic History, a visual companion to Paul Gilroy’s Black Britain, (Westbourne Press, 2013), her co-edited 500 page volume, The Cambridge History of Black and Asian British Writing (CUP, 2019), which creates a line of work stretching back to the 18th century and, Brave New Words: The Power of Writing Now, a collection of non-fiction essays (Myriad Editions, 2019).
