Literary Arts
Booker Prize winner, art critic and poet John Berger was a Hackney resident and friend of CLR James, Dalston library’s namesake, and Ken Worpole and Farrukh Dhondy will join us for the evening to speak of their memories of their friendship. We will also be joined by Berger’s biographer, Tom Overton, who has edited several collections on Berger’s work. * Ken Worpole is a writer and social historian, and author of books on architecture, landscape and public policy. A long-standing resident and writer about Hackney, he has more recently pursued a particular interest in the social history and landscape of 20th century Essex, and its connection to London's East End. The New Statesman observed recently that: ‘Worpole is a literary original, a social and architectural historian whose books combine the Orwellian ideal of common decency with understated erudition.’ Farrukh Dhondy was born in Poona India and after school and college came on a scholarship to Cambridge and went on to establish himself as a writer of journalism, fiction, non-fiction, TV, stage plays and several films. In a post-graduate year in Leicester, living in the Asian enclave of the city, he joined the Indian Workers’ Association and then in London, the British Black Panther Movement and subsequently the radial Race Today Collective, both of whose politics were guided by the writings and presence of Trinidadian Marxist philosopher CLR James. When John Berger won the Booker prize for his novel G, he donated half the prize money to the Black Panther Movement in support of its activism and Berger’s cheque for the donation was signed to Farrukh who collected it from John over a drink. The donation was used as a deposit for a house that became the BPM headquarters. Tom Overton is writing John Berger's biography. He catalogued Berger’s archive at the British Library, and edited the collections Portraits: John Berger on Artists, Landscapes: John Berger on Art and, with Matthew Harle, The Underground Sea: John Berger on Miners and the Miners' Strike. Jasmine will deliver a practical session, followed by an in-person Q & A. Children learn all about the world by interacting physically with it right from the start of life. Their learning is dependent on the internal processes of maturation in the body and the brain simultaneously, on their interaction with the environment indoors and outside, at home and in our early years settings, and in the quality of relationships they experience with significant adults, peers and siblings. As they seek to 'figure things out' themselves, our role is to listen deeply and to accompany them on the playful path of discovery, exploration, experimentation, and trial and error woven through each and every day. Jasmine’s practical workshop will help you to explore and discover how active engagement of the body influences far more than we might imagine and will include: An understanding of why babies and children move in the ways that they do, explaining the sensory and motor foundations for learning and developmentA look at some of the significant developmental patterns of the first year of life, and how these form the foundations for later learning, brain development, health and well being (based on the work of Bette Lamont “The Brain Nanny”, Seattle, USA)Creating “irresistible invitations” using a variety of inexpensive, open-ended resources to engage babies and children’s imaginations in stimulating and meaningful play. For this session please wear comfortable clothing for moving around and bring a water bottle. Book Launch – Modernist Graphic Design in Britain 1945–1980 Join us for the launch of a new book exploring the evolution of Modernist Graphic design in Britain from 1945 to 1980! Thursday 7 November, 6-8pm GMT Pentagram Design 11 Needham Road London W11 2RP You are invited to join us at Pentagram Design for the launch of Modernist Graphic Design in Britain from 1945 to 1980 by Ian McLaren and Tony Pritchard. Enjoy refreshments as we delve into the world of British Modernist Graphic Design. The book is the first to provide a representative collection of a number of designers who made a significant and enduring contribution to British visual culture. Following an opening chapter that sets the historical context; the impact of influential schools and colleges, the teachers and students, on higher education curriculum and the related profession is highlighted. The book has been written in an accessible fashion so that it can be read chapter by chapter as a narrative or delved into as a reference work for key information. The final chapter considers the idea that the positive optimism of the Modernist spirit continues to have an enduring appeal as new designers face the new challenges of an ever evolving society. Ian McLaren has worked in more than thirty countries as a graphic designer, consultant, and academic. His work is held in British, German, Polish, Swiss and US collections. He is best known for his work on the Munich Olympics, signing of the Lyon Métro, and France Télécoms ‘Minitél’ user interface. He was British representative on ISO 7001 ‘Symbols internationally tested for public recognition’. He has contributed to numerous books, journals, and reports for international organisations including the European Commission and UNESCO. Tony Pritchard was course leader of the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Design for Visual Communication courses at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts, London. He is a former editor of the International Society of Typographic Designers’ journal ‘Typographic’.
