WeOnFyre Cypher is an international community outreach and movement that originated as an idea created by FyreNation Crew co-founder Joy Kuma Gasaway in 2014 and launched in 2020. WeOnFyre Cypher provides monthly free, family-friendly, community events that travel to various areas in and around metro-Atlanta, as well as internationally to various countries including Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Congo, Tanzania, and the Philippines. The events provide communities a safe intersection that allows others to experience, find, question and support the creative arts and movements, as well as uplift one of HipHop's cultural traditions--the cypher--which is a gathering of artists and appreciators who unite to display and share a common love for their artistry. Even though it is international and has hosted tours in different countries since 2022, WeOnFyre Cypher NEVER charges attendance or vendors to attend, and strictly enforces that all of their events are family-friendly and safe, providing edited music choices, and safe vendor materials so that the experiences are 100% positive and safe for all. GSU’s Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora (CSAD), with funding from the Mellon IAS Collective, is hosting a Black History Authors Showcase on February 25, 2025, from 6p-8p at the Georgia State University College of Law, the evening before the 4-hour live streaming Read-a-Thon event. The event will be moderated by Rose Scott, host of WABE’s Closer Look with Rose Scott, and will feature a discussion with distinguished authors Kiese Laymon, Myriam Chancy, and Frank X Walker. The authors will explore themes of migration, identity, and heritage through the lens of the CSAD Global Read-a-thon theme, “Roots: The Journey of Us,”. In both the Authors Showcase and Read-a-Thon, we will celebrate global narratives about Africa and the African diaspora. Following the conversation, attendees can purchase books from A Capella Books and have them signed by the authors. A reception with drinks and light refreshments will allow guests to mingle with the authors and fellow participants. This is a grown and sexy game night hosted by Blvck Spades and MODEx Studio, intended for anyone who wants an immersive Super Bowl viewing experience while enjoying a night of good vibes, good people, and fun. The Super Bowl: The game will be displayed throughout the venue but most prominently in the theater area on the 60x13-foot panoramic video wall. Charis and Auburn Avenue Research Library welcome Juanita Tolliver in conversation with Josie Duffy Rice for a discussion of A More Perfect Party: The Night Shirley Chisholm and Diahann Carroll Reshaped Politics, a riveting account of the once-in-an-era party, hosted by Diahann Carroll for Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 presidential campaign, that laid out a blueprint to return power to the people and level the playing field for Black women in politics. In 1972, New York Representative Shirley Chisholm broke the ice in American politics when she became the first Black woman to run for president of the United States. Chisholm left behind a coalition-building model personified by a once-in-an-era Hollywood party hosted by legendary actress and singer Diahann Carroll, and attended by the likes of Huey P. Newton, Barbara Lee, Berry Gordy, David Frost, Flip Wilson, Goldie Hawn and others. In A More Perfect Party, MSNBC political analyst Juanita Tolliver presents a path to people-centered politics through the lens of this soiree, with surprising parallels to our current electoral reality. Chisholm worked the crowd of movie stars, media moguls, music executives and activists gathered at Carroll’s opulent Beverly Hills home, forging relationships with laughter as she urged guests to unify behind her campaign. With the feminist movement on the rise and eighteen- to twenty-year-olds voting for the first time in American history, the Democratic Party and the nation were on the cusp of long-overdue change.
